YOU ARE NOT ALONE
Number one priority of nearly all criminal defense clients is to get out of jail. Getting released from jail prior to your trial is not always easy. From signature bonds to property or commercial bonds. Hiring a lawyer at this point is always crucial.
You should almost never just plead guilty as charged. You may be able to get a plea bargain (plead guilty to a lesser charge), or even sometimes get a dismissal through a technicality or at an actual trial. An experienced attorney should be able to advise you of your best options.
If you had an attorney through phases 1 and 2, you should already be advised on what to expect as to whether or not your criminal charges will remain visible on any background checks. If done properly, you may be eligible to have your record expunged without any filing fees or court costs.
If you or a loved one has been arrested for a DUI or DWI, then you should almost definitely seek an experienced criminal defense lawyer for help. The penalties for these get worse, and may affect your future opportunities if not handled properly.
There is a difference between a drug user and a drug dealer, and are often both lumped into one category. Ideally, the user should quit using; but jail is NOT always the solution for sobriety. Drug cases are not all the same and should be handled cautiously with your future in mind.
Louisiana has lumped theft and similar charges into the same categories or brackets where the punishment is dependent on the amount in controversy. Other times, theft charge tend to be just miscommunications between 2 people.
In Louisiana: if the sentence for a particular crime carries X to Y years at hard labor, then it's a felony. In fact; these charges are so serious, that the state will actually provide you with an attorney if you cannot afford one. If you can; then find one who has actual trial experience.
Any crime NOT a felony is considered a misdemeanor. Some misdemeanors can become felonies after 2nd, 3rd, or more offenses. If you hired an experienced criminal defense attorney for any previous misdemeanors, then you may be in a better chance of avoiding these subsequent charges.
Don't wait until the last minute to get your criminal record cleaned up. Not everyone or every crime is eligible for an expungement, and they are not automatic. Sometimes an expungement is the difference between a career change and unemployment. Don't wait, call to see if you may be eligible as soon as possible.
